"The Clock of War" | Ukrainian Stories in Photographs

We are very happy to look back on the exhibition “THE CLOCK OF WAR” — an exhibition of Ukrainian photography, which took place at UNION Basel from 10 to 28 June.

It was a great honour for Kozak Buvette to be a partner and co-organiser of this project. We with Kozak Buvette team also prepared the Apero for the exhibition opening.

We realised the project together with Patrick Lüthy, founder of the exhibition and the Ukrainian Photo Diary photography project, as well as the team at UNION Basel.

During the exhibition, 328 people visited, and CHF 1,619 was collected and sent to Ukraine to support humanitarian needs.

The Exhibition Opening

The exhibition was accompanied by a diverse programme of events.

At the opening, guests enjoyed musical performances by Bohdan Palyliulko on piano and Liuba Ohorodnychuk on violin. We also had the opportunity to hear the Varta Choir, which performs Ukrainian songs every Friday at 18:00 at Marktplatz.

The atmosphere of the evening was warm and welcoming, although the subject of the exhibition naturally left plenty of space for silence, reflection and more difficult emotions.

Ukrainian Traditions and Workshops

Throughout the exhibition, we also organised several free workshops.

During the Motanka Doll Workshop, led by Maryna Zarynnа, participants learned about the tradition of the Ukrainian Motanka doll and created their own. The workshop was followed by a musical performance by Olha Lytvynova and Bohdan Palyliulko.

For Ivana Kupala, we organised another free workshop, this time focused on painting. Together with the participants, we created symbolic wreaths and flowers, celebrating the traditions of the holiday and searching for our own “fern flower”.

At the finissage, we were happy to enjoy a piano and guitar concert by Ukrainian musician Oleksandr Haidai.

In this way, the exhibition became not only a space for photography, but also a place for meeting, Ukrainian culture, music, traditions and conversation.

The Project Continues Its Journey

The Ukrainian Photo Diary project continues to travel across Switzerland. In August, the exhibition was also presented in Aarau.

We are very happy that this project continues to tell stories about Ukraine and the war through photography — allowing people to see not only statistics and news, but also real human stories and moments of everyday life.
